This month we are covering everything there is to know about CBD. Two weeks ago, we dived into the controversial topic and discussed the truths and myths regarding CBD. Last week, we discussed the many physical benefits of adding CBD to your wellness routine. As we’ve stated, CBD holds the key to the wide variety of medicinal and therapeutic effects that the compound can offer. The more we learn about this chemical powerhouse, the more it seems poised to revolutionize medicine as we know it. And with that said, I want to discuss the mental benefits of CBD.

What is CBD Oil Again?

CBD oil is an extract of the cannabis or hemp plant. The cannabis and hemp plants are made up of numerous chemical compounds called cannabinoids. CBD oil is a tincture taken from the hemp plant that has a high concentration of phytocannabinoids. It is designed to be ingested or otherwise consumed in order to reap the benefits of cannabidiol’s impact on the body’s major systems.

When ingested, these compounds impact the human body in a variety of ways. CBD, or cannabidiol, does not have any psychoactive effects on users. However, when ingested, CBD directly impacts multiple biological systems – mainly the central nervous system.

CBD and Stress

When we experience stress, our bodies go into “fight or flight” mode. Our blood pressure increases and our heart rate accelerates. The body is smart, and it begins to produce an excess of cortisol – aka the stress hormone. Our body does this to give us the extra energy we need to either fight that stressor or run from it. And while that was great for our ancient ancestors, those of us in modern times are dealing with a lot more types of common stress. We stress about work, relationships, and family drama, to name a few. And because of all that stress, our bodies are constantly in that accelerated mode. This is one of the reasons so many of us are dealing with an anxiety disorder or symptoms of them.

The biggest reported mental benefit of CBD oil is its ability to help users effectively manage stress. When CBD is ingested, cannabinoids enter the bloodstream. They interact with the endocannabinoid system. This is the system responsible for regulating mood, sleep, appetite, and more. CBD stimulates this system to release more endocannabinoids as well as other hormones and enzymes that may induce feelings of calm in the body. It may also limit the production of cortisol, taking the body out of fight-or-flight mode and into homeostasis.

As a result, those prone to anxiety and stress are able to alleviate and sometimes even prevent panic attacks. Not to mention manage other stress in their lives.

CBD and Cognitive Function

Studies also show that those adding CBD to their daily wellness routine, also show improved cognitive function. Many mental issues, especially illnesses such as depression, are caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals.

In addition to the endocannabinoid system, the cannabinoids in CBD oil also interact with our central nervous system. The use of CBD oil can lead to healthy nerve function, neuron firing, and interaction with the rest of the body. And as a result, users may experience mental clarity, greater levels of rational thinking, and even self-awareness!

CBD, Sleep, and Digestion

Stress and other mental factors can be incredibly damaging to our sleep cycles and digestion patterns. For example, those suffering from depression often note that they either sleep too much or too little. Poor sleep and digestion can hinder our lives in a number of different ways.

On the first hand, sleep is one of the best things we do for our bodies. It is during sleep that we are able to heal and recover from injury, regenerate cells, and even process our emotions. Disturbed and lack of sleep can impair cognitive function and physical performance. Poor sleep can also lead to mood imbalances, social issues, and eating problems. On the second hand, we have digestion. Digestion capability is so important for our bodies. It is during this process that we absorb the crucial nutrients, minerals, and vitamins our bodies thrive off of. Not to mention, 70% of our immune system lives in our digestive tract.

How does CBD come into play you ask? Well, cannabidiol works with the endocannabinoid system to regulate your sleep patterns. And it promotes long periods of undisrupted sleep. It also can trigger the release of stomach enzymes. Stomach enzymes regulate the digestive processes and promote healthy gut function!

As We Do More Research on the Mental Benefits of CBD…

As we stated last week, the more research and studies we do on CBD, the more we realize how valuable this chemical compound. CBD can truly help with the mental symptoms of many diseases and disorders. CBD oil may alleviate stress, improve sleeping patterns, and reduce the impact of triggers. It may even improve cognitive function. The benefits of CBD oil may include the ability to help people with mental illness effectively manage their symptoms and daily experiences.
