This month we are covering everything there is to know about CBD. Last week we dived into the controversial topic and discussed the truths and myths regarding it. As we said last week, CBD holds the key to the wide variety of medicinal and therapeutic effects that the compound can offer. The more we learn about this chemical powerhouse, the more it seems poised to revolutionize medicine as we know it. This week, I want to discuss the physical benefits of CBD.

Before we begin, today’s post is going to cover the benefits of CBD oil in particular. Again, as we mentioned last week, CBD is one of the two elements that make up the illegal drug, marijuana. CBD, aka cannabidiol, is the chemical aiding in relief and recovery from many ailments. It is not a psychoactive compound. CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant and diluting it with a carrier oil (coconut, hemp, almond, etc.). It’s gaining momentum in the health and wellness world, with some scientific studies confirming it may help treat the physical body in a number of ways.

The Physical Benefits of CBD

Treating Pain

It turns out that marijuana has been used to treat pain as far back as 2900 B.C. Our ancient ancestors didn’t have the technology to break down the components of their “magical” plant. But they continually used it in their healing practices because it consistently worked. Today’s scientists have discovered that certain components of marijuana, especially CBD, can be used to cope with excessive and chronic pain.

The human body is composed of a number of incredible and intricate systems. A specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) regulates a variety of functions. These include sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response. The body produces endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system. Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain and inflammation.

For example, one study found that CBD injections reduced pain response to surgical incision among rats. Yet another rat study found that oral CBD treatment significantly reduced sciatic nerve pain and inflammation.

Symptoms/Side Effects Related to Cancer

CBD can also be used to help treat symptoms and side effects of cancer. This is especially true when reducing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. These symptoms are among the most common chemotherapy-related side effects for those with cancer. CBD oil can also help treat the aches and pains often associated with cancer as well. And while there are drugs out on the market that is supposed to help with these distressing symptoms, they aren’t always effective. This is why so many cancer patients are seeking other holistic alternatives.

There are also studies being done in regards to using CBD as a potential anticancer drug! “Cannabinoids possess anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects and they are known to interfere with tumor neovascularization, cancer cell migration, adhesion, invasion, and metastasization.” CBD is effective in the modulation of different steps of tumorigenesis in several types of cancer. This is pretty exciting scientific news, and only through more research could we possibly find a way to stop cancer before it even begins!

Neurological Disorders

Researchers believe that CBD’s ability to act on the endocannabinoid system and other brain signaling systems may provide benefits for those with neurological disorders. In fact, one of the most studied uses for CBD is in treating neurological disorders like epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Though research in this area is still relatively new, several studies have shown promising results.

One study gave 214 people with severe epilepsy 0.9–2.3 grams of CBD oil per pound (2–5 g/kg) of body weight. Their seizures reduced by a median of 36.5%. One more study found that CBD oil significantly reduced seizure activity in children with Dravet syndrome. Dravet syndrome is a complex childhood epilepsy disorder, compared to a placebo. And several other studies have shown that treatment with CBD improved quality of life and sleep quality for people with Parkinson’s disease.

The Heart and Circulatory System

Some recent research has linked CBD with several benefits for the heart and circulatory system. This includes the ability to lower high blood pressure. High blood pressure is linked to higher risks of a number of health conditions, including stroke, heart attack, and metabolic syndrome. Studies indicate that CBD may be a natural and effective treatment for high blood pressure. One recent study treated 10 healthy men with one dose of 600 mg of CBD oil and found it reduced resting blood pressure, compared to a placebo. The same study also gave the men stress tests that normally increase blood pressure. Interestingly, the single dose of CBD led the men to experience a smaller blood pressure increase than normal in response to these tests.

Acne

This last one isn’t a life-threatening disease or life-altering condition. But it is something that affects roughly 9% of the population. Acne is thought to be caused by a number of factors. These factors include genetics, bacteria, and underlying inflammation. It also can be caused by the overproduction of sebum. Sebum is an oily secretion made by sebaceous glands in the skin. Based on recent scientific studies, CBD oil may help treat acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Not to mention its ability to reduce sebum production. But although these results are promising, human studies exploring the effects of CBD on acne are needed.

As We Do More Research on the Physical Benefits of CBD…

As we stated last week, the more research and studies we do on CBD, the more we realize how valuable this chemical compound. CBD can truly help with the physical symptoms of many diseases and disorders. Which is why we need to stop thinking of it as something negative. CBD is capable of fighting back against the most serious diseases. Yet while gentle enough to be a part of a daily health regimen. Cannabidiol is truly one of the most remarkable compounds in the natural world.
