We’re only a few weeks into the new year. How are your resolutions going? If you’re like the many who have decided to get healthy in 2020, there’s a chance you’ve stayed strong in this commitment. However, there’s also the chance you’ve fallen off the wagon. When this happens, many of us think a drastic cleanse or organic detox is the answer to kickstart this new journey. Before you do that though, we want to take a minute and talk about this concept of organic detoxing and if you really need one to get healthy.
The Truth About Organic Detoxing
We have talked about the concept of organic detoxing before. And how “the choices we make each day impact our body’s abilities to naturally detoxify the body. The more “unhealthy” choices we partake in, the more of a challenge this becomes. This is why those detoxifying products sound so alluring. In an age where we expect instant gratification, a 3-day detox “cleanse” sounds better than making those consistent healthier choices.”
But our bodies have more than enough capability to cleanse and detox from toxins. Our skin releases toxins through the process of sweating. Our kidneys sort through them via urination. The lungs utilize respiration. And the list goes on. As we said before, our bodies can only detox optimally when our support organs are functioning at their best. Meaning we should focus less on these supplements and more on making the best choices for them daily. These choices include but aren’t limited to:
- Diet choices
- Amount of restorative sleep per night
- Amount of physical exercise
- Stress levels
- Genetic predisposition
The Food We Eat
They say health starts in the kitchen. And they are not wrong. Our digestive tract is a great measure of our health. If digestion is poor, that could mean that your cells aren’t getting the nutrients necessary for natural detoxification. It could also mean that the lining barrier of the digestive tract isn’t keeping harmful toxins out of the rest of your body!
The good news is that a healthy diet can begin to repair and restore an ineffective digestive tract! Set a goal to try and eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables every single day (try some of these plant-based recipes to sneak more servings in!) Also try to incorporate lean and plant-based proteins as well as healthy fats. Eat minimally processed grains as your individual body is able to. And aim for foods that are roasted or baked as opposed to fried.
Hydrate with Clean Water
We all know that our bodies are mostly made up of water. Meaning that we need to continue to replenish any amounts that we lose. But unfortunately, we can’t just use any old water in today’s world. Water has the potential to be contaminated with things like:
- Lead
- Arsenic
- Radon
- Medication
- Excessive chlorine
- Pesticides
- Fertilizers
- Waste
- THMs (trihalomethanes)
- Other solvents
These toxins have been linked to illness and disease such as cancer, brain damage, nervous system damage, and hormone disruption.
Again, no need to fret, as there are a number of water filtration systems on the market. Be wary of switching entirely to plastic bottles though, as chemical additives can leach into the water inside the bottle! Bottled water manufacturers are not required to test for contaminants. Plus comes at a cost of the increased trash and wasted energy resources involved in making, filling, and transporting all those bottles.
Cleaning and Other Topical Toxins
Within the last decade, people have been exchanging their chemical-filled household and personal products for those of a natural variety. That is because heavy chemically laden cleaners have been linked to asthma and other respiratory problems, as well as cancer, liver damage, skin issues, and more. In regard to cleaning, the most trusted reduced toxin brands include:
- Bronner’s
- Meyer’s
- Better /life
- Greenshield
- Earth Friendly
- Vinegar and essential oils
In regard to personal care items and beauty, more and more “clean” brands are popping up by the day. When researching, look for products free from:
- Parabens
- Phthalates
- BPA
- DEP
- DnBP
- Sodium laureth sulfate
