Fish oil is one of the most commonly consumed dietary supplements today. It’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These acids are pretty crucial in aiding in optimal health. Most importantly, omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that are important in preventing and managing heart disease. However, they provide a number of other benefits as well. If you don’t eat a lot of oily fish, taking a fish oil supplement could help you get enough omega-3 fatty acids.
Fish Oil and Health
Findings show omega-3 fatty acids may help to:
- Lower blood pressure
- Reduce triglycerides
- Slow the development of plaque in the arteries
- Reduce the chance of abnormal heart rhythm
- Reduce the likelihood of heart attack and stroke
- Lessen the chance of sudden cardiac death in people with heart disease
The Main Event: Heart Health
Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. And studies have shown that people who eat a lot of fish have much lower rates of heart disease. There are a number of risk factors for heart disease. Many of them appear to be reduced by fish/fish oil consumption.
There are a number of benefits of consuming fish oil. The first is aiding in cholesterol levels. Fish oil can increase levels of HDL (the “good”) cholesterol. However, it does not appear to reduce levels of LDL (the “bad”) cholesterol. Fish oil can also lower triglycerides by about 15–30%. Even in small doses, fish oil helps reduce blood pressure in those with high blood pressure. And it may prevent the plaques that form in arteries and cause them to harden.
In people who are at risk, it may reduce fatal arrhythmia events. Arrhythmias are abnormal heart rhythms that can cause heart attacks in certain cases. Fish oil supplementation can improve many of the risk factors for heart disease. But as a disclaimer, there is no clear evidence that it can prevent heart attacks or strokes.
Supplements
Furthermore, at Zock Family Chiropractic, we often suggest patients supplement with Nutritional Frontiers products. Nutritional Frontiers has come up with a number of fish oil supplements to help aid in your health.
